YO JOE! I'm back on the throwbacks with a vengance. As a kid I collected G.I.Joe figures and indulged in the 80's cartoon. One of the most remembered characters for me was Destro. Looking back now as an adult, he looks kinda pimpish, so I had to throw the Barroness in this pic. For the backdrop, I tried to replicate the toy packaging. I drew the characters on animation paper, scanned them in, then colored it all in photoshop.
NOW IT"S YOUR TURN TO DRAW YOUR FAVORITE JOE! BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF THE YEAR DRAW YOUR VERSION OF YOUR FAVORITE JOE ( or Joes) AND SUBMIT IT FOR A PRIZE! CONTEST DETAILS WILL BE POSTED SOON. START SKETCHING NOW BECAUSE "KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!"
Last entry before the deadline: Wild Bill. I liked Wild Bill, the later versions of him are sort of strange...I remember the Silver mirrored aviators and the Blue Cowboy Hat.
Here is another entry: Blowtorch. How I remember him...the first one....Seems later on in the 90's they really messed some of these figures up and made them really goofy looking..wonder why they did that? Sort of like when the re-released the Star Wars figures and they were all roided up and ripped.
I really enjy seeing the GIJOE characters re-envisioned in the different styles. Here is another entry: AIRBORN. I remember liking this figure as a kid and, like the other Joes in the series,...his last figure designs are pretty bad...but this image is based off the original one that I had.
I loved the toys more than the cartoon as a kid. I just kept wondering "Why isn't anyone suffering any casualties?" My teachers thought it was propaganda to make war socially acceptable to children. Buncha hippies. :)
Any-hoo, I've entered Tomax and Xamot, the evil, rich, cowardly twins. They double the pain GI Joe feels! A parody of very old Doublemint ad.
I don't know what was my favorite part of G.I. Joe. The cartoon? The file cards on the back of the packaging? The completely posable figures? The decals for the vehicles? Putting the vehicles together in order to play with it? I could go on....
