YO JOE! I'm back on the throwbacks with a vengance. As a kid I collected G.I.Joe figures and indulged in the 80's cartoon. One of the most remembered characters for me was Destro. Looking back now as an adult, he looks kinda pimpish, so I had to throw the Barroness in this pic. For the backdrop, I tried to replicate the toy packaging. I drew the characters on animation paper, scanned them in, then colored it all in photoshop.
NOW IT"S YOUR TURN TO DRAW YOUR FAVORITE JOE! BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF THE YEAR DRAW YOUR VERSION OF YOUR FAVORITE JOE ( or Joes) AND SUBMIT IT FOR A PRIZE! CONTEST DETAILS WILL BE POSTED SOON. START SKETCHING NOW BECAUSE "KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!"
I collected GI Joe toys as a kid, but even more impactful on me were the comic books. They got me into reading comic books on a regular basis and reading other comics besides just GI Joe. I got into animation in part because of the GI Joe cartoon and comic book influences.
Years later, I got to combine animation and GI Joe and actually contribute to the GI Joe continuity. I worked on the GI Joe CG commercials and then as an animator on the two direct to video features. It was a blast being a part of the universe.
I loved those films! What an AMAZING surprize that you found your way to the contest. Welcome aboard Throwback Thursdays and thanks for sharing. I'm sure we would all love to see you contribute to the GIJOE contest.
I loved this series!! I grew up at the perfect time to be a GI JOE fanatic!! I used to dream about getting every single toy out there. I especially liked the relationship dynamic between storm shadow and snake eyes. These two had some great battles and I loved how snake eyes was always such a badass. Anyways here is my preliminary sketches for my pieces for this contest. I'm shooting for two pieces let's hope I can pull it off. Hey everybody, i want to see more sketches in this forum from all you out there!!!!
This is a Cool idea for a contest. It will be great to see different artists take on a well know series.
Here is my contribution..so far...MUTT and JUNKYARD...such a cool idea, I am going to try and do a couple more.
The trick to this contest is deciding which Joe to do...I had forgotten until I went the the archive figure site ...just how many there were. http://cartooncaveman.blogspot.com/
Looking GOOD Jim! Thanks for stepping up to the plate. You are officially the first of many great submissions. Nice choice of characters btw. I'm hoping to spark some childhood memories during the contest as well.
I've been trying to attach a picture to this reply, but the system keeps gagging and choking on it. Let see if clicking on this address will allow you to see my picture of "Shipwreck" on shore leave.
The red headed sailor was only figure to last from the 60's and the transition from 12 inch to 3 and 3/4 inch figures. The lady in red is based on an old friend from my Navy days.
Here's mine, my favorite Joe of all time, Artight. He was the first one I remember buying as a kid, and I still have him to this day, albeit with a new O-ring (my joes swam a lot).
hell to the yeah! cool stuff ALREADY, guys! I'm about to start mine now, just as soon as I can get these plumbers and their damn drill sergeant friend outta here.
Here is my version of: ICEBERG. Wanted to do a Snow Jo...there is a few of them...Snow Job might be coming next if I can complete it by the deadline. Can someone direct me to how you imbed an image into a post so that it shows up?
