Hey, I have a quick question about a character design portfolio. What is everyone's opinion about rough drawings in a portfolio? I have some drawings cleaned up and colored for presentation. I also have a lot of rough sketches of different designs and I want to show that. I was wondering if using my rough doodles as part of my portfolio would be a good idea. Thank ya

Yes-- always a good idea to have a page or two of those.

Yeah, a page or two wouldn't hurt. You could also put the cleaned up version of those drawings side by side.

Thank you for the help, fellas! How rough can the pictures be? I thought about putting together some concept sketches and pose of a character I made on a page. I'm worried about it being too messy though.

I don't think it matters how messy unless its soo messy you can't tell what it is.

Why not ask a couple of working artists for copy of their portfolio (preferably digital, since they don't have to shell out for printing)?

Then you know exactly what has worked for some people in the past.

...!! I can do that? I never thought of that. Who could I ask? I do check out other artist's websites and portfolios online. I also look at the work done by the studios I would like to work for, so that helps me out.

I happen to know a kid that has his portfolio online. Check it out at www.comlock.net .
