Is anyone on the forums heading out to the Ottawa animation Festival this year in Sept.? This will be my first year in attendance and I am greatly looking forward to it. My old friend Ward Jenkins gave me the heads up that he was going this year and I just wanted to see if I would be able to meet some people from the RAW forums there.
Not sure about these questions, but just wanted to add onto the great answers that TempleDog gave you above:
The great thing about Ottawa and the OIAF is that everything's within walking distance. Find a good place closeby and enjoy the scenery each day. One word of advice, though: although it's exciting to work out a certain schedule for each day, better find time to squeeze in lunch and/or dinner. Most of all the screenings, panels, & workshops flow right after each other, with nary enough time to grab a bite to eat. Work it in, or bring something along with you. I can't tell you how many times I ended up having a big headache and was so worn out because of an empty stomach for the 9pm screenings.
Crap, I hate it when I accidentally close my tabs in the FireFox! Ward's right, o' course...so many good events in a day that you'll happily run yerself ragged. When your passing by, stopping in at Shopper's Drug Mart or one of the corner canteens and picking up a big bag o' trail mix and a bottle of water and stashing it in yer goody bag is a good idea, just don't whip 'em out around the ushers at the National Gallery or NAC. Here's the map of mappy goodness:
Like Ward sez, everything is within walkin' distance for the major events and screenings. You might have to hop a cab or grab a lift with a buddy to get to some of the parties, however, like the one at the Music Hall. Either way, you'll have a blast...just bring some comfy walkin' shoes!
What do I need to do to get in or at least submit?Has to be your film, completed no more than 1 year before the fest date (so in this case, June 2007) Has to be submitted for review by their deadline, if chosen you'll have to get 'em a copy on betacam sp tape for screening. More details on the Ottawa site:
Just be aware: Not to discourage, but this is one of the biggest fests on Oith, with 110 or so films selected from 2000-3000 (!) entries every year, getting in ain't easy. Remember, it all comes down to the tastes of the programmers and the overall program of films...they not only have to select what they believe are the best films to screen, but also a selection that will work well with each other when screened together! Here's the word on what to do and what not from the Animation Pimp hisself, fest organizer Chris Robinson:
And if you don't get in, yer in good company, meself included. Chris has organized a Salon des Refusees, a fancy way of saying "place to see films what weren't picked". So you can go after the main screening, show yer film, cry in yer beer and curse Chris' name to the high heavens. Either way, you'll have a good time.
Would they take any of the animations posted on RAW? Again, as long as it's your production and you've cleared all the rights to your music and images, and it's within the production timeline. Head over to the OIAF site for all the official skinny. Good luck!
