I live in NJ, (close enough to NYC for this group I hope!) but I've tried for a while to get a foothold in Hollywood. Either my work's not as good as it should, or the West coast just doesn't need to import animators from out East.
I've thought once or twice of packing up and moving to Californy to try my luck, but haven't done it.
So why are you in NY? Maybe I'll understand why I'm still here.
I'm debating whether I count, for most people are saying NY and meaning NYC. I'm in Buffalo, the west end of NY. I tell people i moved to work here and I get the most surprised look ever. Pretty entertaining. Everyone tries to leave here, not come back in.
Thing is, a friend of mine worked here, then left for Cali. I took his place and I needed the experience badly. I was previously working at SEARS out of college, so you can see how I was willing to do anything to get out. Interestingly enough, this place has done some great work and though times can get slim, we keep busy.
So in the end, i moved for experience :) This'll help me break out into other places afterwards. I had nothing worth showing to higher end studios with my college work. Ambitious, sure, but thoughts don't prove quality.
I'm in New York because it's where I got my first job, and where I've gotten employment! Since I moved here, I've come to really enjoy the city, and meet a lot of great friends. I'll probably end up in California some day, but I'm enjoying New York while it lasts ;)
I live in CA, but I joined this group because the spirit of the NYC Independent Animation scene still infects me.
The Law of New York: "If you don't see it yet, make it!"
The Law of Los Angeles: "If you don't see it yet, convince someone else that they've seen it already and it's been successful but you're going to put a new twist on it but not so twisty that it won't make a zillion bucks!"
