Profile Information

Tell us your story:
My story is constantly changing. Sometimes it's a comedy, sometimes it's a drama... sometimes it's a horror story.
Hometown:
Kalamazoo, Michigan - yes, really
Portfolio Site:
http://fountainsportfolio.blogspot.com/
About Me:
I'm a cartoon director who aspires to revolutionize the way cartoons are made so that it's fun again.
I've been a writer, producer, director, storyboard artist, character designer, animator, and voiceover artist for shows such as Oh Yeah! Cartoons ("The Tantrum" is my Fred Film), The Fairly Oddparents, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Yin Yang Yo!, HERO:108, Edgar and Ellen, Chalk Zone, the South Park movie and Invader Zim.
I've also done development work for Disney and Warner brothers and I'm currently writing a graphic novel for Tokyopop publishing.
I've also illustrated a handfull of contributions to Hot Mexican Love comics and a children's book called Birthday Wishes (available at Amazon.com) - all written by my wife Leigh.
Favorite Cartoons:
Oh boy... this could go on forever...
All of the classic Disney, Warner Brothers (Bugs Bunny is probably my overall favorite cartoon character) and Fleischer cartoons... everything by Gainax (FLCL is a standout), Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life... I mean, seriously, we could be here all day...
Favorite Films:
Star Wars (all of them), The Lord of the Rings, Godfather, Iron Giant, Incredibles, Silence of the Lambs, Indianna Jones, all of Kevin Smith's movies, everything by Miyazaki, Nightmare on Elm Street, Idiocracy, Stripes, Ghostbusters and... oh dear lord, just a whole bunch of other movies...
Favorite TV Shows:
Mystery Science Theater 3000, M*A*S*H*, RENO:911, South Park, Seinfeld, Dr. Katz, The Young Ones, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Lost, Heroes, House, Dexter, The Riches, Ugly Betty, the first six seasons of The Simpsons and the list just goes on and on and on... I'm a pop-culture junkie.
Favorite Comics:
Anything and everything by: Robert Crumb (Mr. Natural), Peter Bagge (HATE), Daniel Clowes (Eightball), Evan Dorkin (DORK), Kyle Baker (Why I Hate Saturn), Ivan Brunetti (Schizo), Charles Schulz(Peanuts), Bill Watterson (Calvine and Hobbes), Chris Ware (ACME), George Herriman (Krazy Kat and Ignatz), Patrick McDonnell (Mutts) and Bill Griffith (Zippy the Pinhead).
I also dig my superhero fix from time to time in the form of Spider-Man, Superman, Batman and The Incredible Hulk. I also think Archie comics from the 50s are rad.
Favorite Books:
Mind over Matters by Michael J. Nelson, The Lord of the Rings, Zodiac, anything by Moliere and all of the Douglas Adams Hitchhiker books.
I also love true-crime stuff and anything having to do with philosophy or politics.
Favorite Artists or Illustrators:
See my comics list. Additionally, I like Salvadore Dali, Magritte, Picasso as well as some modern folks like Barlowe and an army of pin-up illustrators.
Favorite Music:
Above all: PETER GABRIEL. I invite you to get me talking about his genius if you have an infinite number of hours to spare.
I also love The Beatles, Genesis, Phil Collins, Tenacious D, Tori Amos, Weird Al Yankovick, Bloodhound Gang, Enya, Vanessa Mae, Gorillaz and a select variety of other obscure artists.
Favorite Robots:
No question:
R2D2
My favorite robot as well as my favorite fictional character of all time.

SUPPORT HOT MEXICAN LOVE!

What is HOT MEXICAN LOVE COMICS, you ask? Well, it's an anthology book created by a bunch of us animation-type folks here in the Los Angeles area.
There have been six annual issues over the years, and I have contributed 3-page comics to the past three volumes.
Each story was written in rhyme by my wife Leigh and, of course, illustrated by yours truly. For a sample, take a look at the new drawing in my gallery... it's a panel from the midd… Continue

Thinkin' Out Loud About Animation

Everybody always talks about animation and making TV cartoons as if it's the hardest thing in the universe. Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm delusional, maybe I'm just wrong - but I honestly don't think animation is all that difficult.

I think a lot of the problems that productions encounter are unintentionally self-imposed.

Animation isn't necessarily 'hard' but it IS necessarily 'complex.' It requires the harmonious combination of a LOT of different skills and a LOT of different art forms, and if… Continue

I LOVE TO RANT!

Okay... here's where I make rapidfire snotty judgements on things and stuff:

'CLOVERFIELD' - What a horrible waste of time. Don't avoid it because you get motion sickness... avoid it because it's just a really awful movie.

'THE VENTURE BROTHERS' - I feel like an ass for getting in on this one so late - but my GOD what a great show.

'HALO 3' - Call me a sucker, but I can't get enough of this crap.

'PORTAL' - Easily one of the most challenging and entertainingly cerebral and creepy games I've… Continue

Having things come out the way you want them to must really be a great feeling. 8 years ago? You must be downright amazing now.

Hey John! Funny meeting you in a place like this. You don't know how many times I've tried to e-mail at your old address and mail bounced back. I hope all has been well with you, man. Hit me up sometimes so we can touch base.
